Kindergarten Preparedness
I love the new energy that the world is under. We are in a space of knowing that we are in charge of our children’s outcomes. And yes, I am an actual certified and degreed teacher, we as a people are also recognizing the fact that regardless of credentials. WE ARE ALL TEACHERS in our own right.
With that said, let’s get our babies ready for Kindergarten.
And that isn’t just ABC, 123.
If your child is like Cayden, he has been home for the past five years. And I remember I use to say, dang, if I don’t get him together he is going to drive somebody’s kindergarten teacher crazy.
I laughed but I also knew I had zero interest in sending my Black son out into the world to be somebody’s problem. Someone’s stress, and definitely not giving someone a reason to treat my son less than.
So I started working with him. I started working with all of my children. But I intentionally worked with Cayden (and Michael) on their ability to sit still. To not speak out of turn. To follow directions and wait for instructions.
When you are preparing your child for any new thing, you have to think outside of the box. Yes, make sure your child can read, recognize numbers as well as count to 100 (at least). But also, prepare the whole child.
I remember when Bailey first started Kindergarten. She would come home and tell me about this one kid who stayed at home until he went to school. She would tell me how he was a huge disruption to the class and how he annoyed all the other students.
Now we are looking at your child’s socialization and ‘fit in’edness’.
Our children have so many things to overcome in a very short amount of time. Let’s make sure they are prepared with the basic expectations of a kindergartener.
Join me in teaching Cayden how to read by August, when school starts here.
